The US Navy coming to the assistance of a pair of oil tankers that were just attacked near the strategic strait of Hormuz. Four tankers were hit last month by these drones.
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo stated…
“It is the assessment of the U.S. government that Iran is responsible for today’s attacks in the Gulf of Oman,” wrote the secretary of state.
“These attacks are a threat to international peace and security, a blatant assault on the freedom of navigation, and an unacceptable escalation of tension by Iran.”
Sailors were forced to evacuate when one of the tankers was left ablaze and the other adrift.
In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Pompeo said Iran is working to disrupt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and are a deliberate part of a campaign to escalate tension.
Jakob P. Larsen, head of maritime security for BIMCO, told the Associated Press that the incident brings the region closer to an armed conflict
“The shipping industry views this as an escalation of the situation, and we are just about as close to a conflict without there being an actual armed conflict, so the tensions are very high.” — Jakob P. Larsen
