Pakistan’s ex-president Asif Ali Zardari arrested for money laundering

Former President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari was lately asked by someone that Hamza Shahbaz has been arrested because of money laundering and what are his views, in response to that Asif Ali Zardari said “It’s a good thing, more the merrier.” He was seen laughing back then. Little did he knew that the same thing would happen to him on June 10th 2019. 

Former Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari is being questioned over a multi-million dollar money-laundering case. Zardari, along with his sister, has been accused of holding dozens of bogus bank accounts.

Case details and criminal acts done by Former Pakistani President

Asif Ali Zardari was escorted from his home in Islamabad, Pakistan, by anti corruption forces. By Zardari’s side was his son, who is the current chairman of the opposition Pakistan peoples party, Billawal Bhutto Zardari, his two daughters, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari. Zardari was mobbed by his supporters and they were seen shouting the party’s slogan “long live Bhutto”  

The former president is accused of using fictitious bank accounts to launder 29 million dollars in kickbacks from government contracts. This is not the first time Asif Ali Zardari has been accused of wrongdoing. He was married to a famous political figure Benazir Bhutto, in 1988 she was the first women to lead a muslim majority nation. He faced allegations of corruption back then and due to that his reputation suffered. He was arrested for extortion in 1990 and six years later on suspicion of ordering the assassination of Benazir’s brother in a political power struggle. After all of this he was released from jail in 2004 and moved to Dubai. 

His wife Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007 because of this Zardari returned to lead Pakistan peoples party and won the people’s vote. He lasted the full five year term. It has been said in the past that he supported the US in it’s efforts to win the war in Afghanistan and helping former President Barack Obama launch an assault on the Taliban inside Pakistan. 

In 2019 the Pakistani government led by Prime Minister Irman Khan has made fighting corruption a priority, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has already been indicated on corruption charges. While Zardari and his sister are aready on bail in at least seven other cases of corruption. The politician denies all wrongdoings.

Recent public statements 

Earlier Bilalwal Bhutto stated that the arrest was made without a formal court order, he stated “It’s our responsibility to represent our people in the National Assembly and hold the government accountable, to stop my father from attending the National Assembly session in the national accountability bureau personnel arrived here today without a judicial order to arrest him. We registered our reservation with them and under protest we gave him into custody under protest because we always respect the law.”

After this one 12th June 2019, a complete strike was observed in Naudero town where protesters took to the streets to demand immediate release of Mr Zardari. In Larkana protesters were seen raising slogans against the federal government and NAB. The protesters are claiming Mr Zardari’s arrest was a calculated move by the PTI government to force the PPP leadership to agree on annulling the 18th Constitutional Amendment. They demanded withdrawal of the “false” references against Mr Zardari. Similar protest took place in different areas of Sindh. Every protestor has a mirror thought and mirror demands.
